The avoid the crowd we visit Angkor Wat in the early morning, at 6.30 am the guide and driver pick you up from the hotel and drive to Angkor Wat, one of the modern wonders of the world. Marvel at the enormous size of the temple and find out how the Khmer Empire flourished between the 9th and 13th centuries, when Angkor Wat was constructed. Wander through the elaborately carved corridors that display hundreds of exquisite carvings and see small shrines that are still used by the local people today. Then we drive to Srah Srang (the royal pool where King Jayavarman VII bathed in the 12th century) and stroll through the village to one of the local houses for high tea, where the hosts will welcome us as friends and offer us fresh fruits, snacks, coffee, and hot tea. Continue to visit Ta Prohm temple, this beautiful temple is one of Angkor’s most impressive structures and is overgrown with fig trees, giving a haunting and exotic atmosphere. The magnificent roots of the trees have merged over the centuries with the temple’s huge stone blocks, emphasizing a ‘lost city’ feeling.
Lunch at Bong Thom Homestay (restaurant).
Drives further north to visit the jewel of Khmer art, Banteay Srei temple, located one hour from Siem Reap. This red sandstone temple is one of Angkor’s most significant structures as its walls are decorated with elaborate carvings in an amazing state of preservation. Then, we drive back to Siem Reap with a final stop of the day at the small but intriguing Landmine Museum of Mr. Aki Ra. Since Cambodia’s freedom from war, Mr. Aki Ra has dedicated himself to helping the Cambodian people by clearing the mines which have been left behind.
